What is Floor Screed?

Although floor screed has in the past been mistaken for concrete, they are, in fact, different. Screed is a thinner layer of concrete like material that is usually poured over the base floor to offer a smooth, strong foundation for your top floor. Although the ‘chemistry’ between floor screed and concrete are daily similar, there are some key differences. These include the size of the aggregates, the grade of cement, the mix consistency and the cement finish. Additionally, it should be made clear that floor screed and concrete are created for two different uses.

Concrete is a coarser mixture that has bigger and harder aggregates, meaning that it has more durability and longevity than floor screed. It is this lifespan that makes concrete the go to material for vast amounts of the industrial areas across the UK. Floor screed on the other hand, has about half the amount of aggregates, making the entire mixture smoother and easier to work with. Although this means that it is not as long lasting as concrete, it should be clear that being durable is not its primary purpose. Instead it is applied above the concrete slabs, giving a smooth finish so that tiles, carpets, wood flooring or resin can be easily applied on top.

This means that floor screed is ideal for indoor spaces. Although floor screed is less durable than concrete, it is more durable than other materials and can stand the test of heavy traffic areas. This means that locations such as restaurants and universities can have a secure floor that will remain firm and easy to walk on throughout its use. The versatile, easy to use nature of floor screed makes it ideal for refurbishing old and uneven floors and remedying the leveling of concrete slabs so they are really flat. The makes screed the ideal solution for any flooring, ensuring that your flooring is flat, neat and comfortable underfoot.
